Birth Doula Services

Having a woman with you during labour and birth has been shown to decrease pain.  Being nurtured by a woman during birth helps you to feel more loving towards your baby.  Feeling supported during this vulnerable time in your life makes you less susceptible to postpartum depression.

Birth doulas help the partner support the mother.  And we provide valuable moral support and information to the partner, helping you find answers to your questions.

Interview more than one doula to ensure a good fit; you and the doula will share the intimate moment of your birth so you need to feel comfortable with her.  I do not charge for the initial interview.

As your birth doula we’ll meet twice to get better acquainted before the birth.  We’ll discuss

  • your hopes for the birth
  • your fears
  • how to tell when you’re in labour
  • tips for coping with contractions
  • breastfeeding
  • the importance of skin to skin contact
  • life with a new baby
  • risk factors & signs of postpartum depression
  • where and when to go for help with your questions
  • baby carriers – there are so many styles- which one is right for you?
  • community resources
  • support people in early postpartum period

As your doula, I will be with you during labour from the time you decide you need my support.  I will stay with you throughout your labour and birth and for a couple of hours after baby arrives.

All birth doulas work with back-up doulas to ensure you will not be alone.

Phone and e-mail support during pregnancy and for six weeks postpartum.

Fee includes a postpartum visit to discuss the birth and answer your questions.  It’s important for those of us who attended the birth to debrief and process your feelings about what happened.  I keep a log during the birth so you’ll have a record of what happened; it can assist you in crafting your birth story.
